Transmission Assembly Tips

Typical kits sell for under 200 dollars and make a rebuild quite easy. Be aware that all kits are not alike, and kit parts have a great range of quality from very high to poor. It is best to ask what components come with the kit before making a purchase. Better companies offer support.

Borg Warner Transmissions

This is your basic early T10. It has a nine-bolt side cover and no external shifter shaft seals. BorgWarner used the same basic design for GM, Ford, and AMC cars. This is a T-10 from a GM car.

Chrysler A833

Unlike the Muncies and T10s, this extension actually holds the complete gear assembly. This design eliminates the mid plate bearing support and the extra parting line, so a stronger case is effectively built. It will not pull out, so don’t try to force it.

GM/Muncie Transmissions

Shift the transmission into second gear, remove the seven side cover bolts, and remove the side cover. Don’t worry about the shift fork or shifter shafts coming out of the cover. If you are going to reuse them, make a note as to their positions.

High Performance Transmissions

Keisler Engineering modified the Tremec TKO 600 to incorporate a side-mount shifter so it could be used in older muscle car applications.

Ford Toploaders

The bearing retainer and top cover are removed. The front bearing had exploded in this transmission, and all that was left of it was the inner race. This ruined the front bearing bore of the case.

Clutch Basics

The clutch drive plate will either be bolted or riveted to the lined surface. It is raised via stand offs to clear the sprung hub. The springs fit in the slots, which drive the plate. I’m removing the plate to expose the hub and springs.

A Guide to Shifters

This is Long Shifters’ high-tech verticalgated shifter. By pulling the lever up, the shifter is positioned with the top gate. Releasing the lever allows the springs to pull the shifter’s arm vertically down each gate and eliminates the need for a conventional H-pattern.

Theory and Operation

In the downshift mode, the slider is powered. In order for the slider to mate with the gear, it must index behind the gear. Whether you are upshifting or downshifting, a “blockout” condition can occur in which wear of the synchro assembly allows the ring and slider to meet point to-point. The arrow shows the direction the ring must take in order for the slider to continue on its path to locking on the gear.
