Exotic India Bhaishajguru- The Healing Buddha or The Medicine Buddha

Bhaishajyaguru, roughly translated as the Healing Buddha or the Medicine Buddha, is that form of the Buddha when he assumes the mastership of remedies. His right palm is open outwards in a gesture of blessing the worldly devotee, betwixt the fingers of which He holds an arura sprig. This endemic Tibetan plant, chebulic myrobalan, is the primary source of Tantric medicinal compounds. The bowl in His left hand is a libation of three nectars: one that cures disease and resurrects one to life, one that counteracts ageing, and one that illuminates the mind with self-knowledge. His unusual, azure complexion is symbolic of His all-encompassing – like the sky – awareness. In fact, explains Tibetan physician Yeshi Donden, that His form is “clear when looking [inward] from the outside and clear when looking outward from the inside”, affording a view of the sky itself.

It was Bhaishajyaguru who established the modern-day Tibetan medical tradition. The same is expounded in the form of texts collectively called The Four Tantras Of Secret Instructions On The Eight Branches Of The Essence Of Immortality. In common parlance, they are referred to as Gyushi, or The Four Medical Tantras.
