In this book Van Kleeck argues that the Christian’s belief in Scripture as the words of God belongs among the great things of the gospel as defined by Jonathan Edwards and subsequently by Alvin Plantinga. By leveraging Plantinga’s form of Reformed Epistemology, Van Kleeck argues that Christian belief in the authority and certainty of Scripture is basic, rational, and warranted regardless of one’s seminary training or lack thereof. He makes this argument by affirming that Christians can and do hold such beliefs via properly functioning regenerated cognitive and affective faculties in an environment conducive to those faculties. Furthermore, he argues that said faculties and environment operate according to a divinely implemented design plan aimed at truth and successfully so aimed. As such, the eighth grade educated farmer and the multiple Ph.D. physicist can both have basic, rational, and warranted belief that the Bible they read is indeed the word of God and that all other bibles merely contain the word of God.
