The solemn preparation for the annual celebration of Christmas and the birth of Christ comprises the four Sundays before Christmas Eve. Candles are traditionally lit on these Advent days. On the first Sunday in December, one of the purple candles is lit. Then on the 2nd Sunday of Advent, the second purple candle is lit. On the 3rd Sunday of Advent, the pink candle is lit together with the two purple candles and on the last 4th Sunday of Advent, all four candles burn together.
